Description: One-of-a-kind availability. This is the U.S. Staff and Field Officer’s Dress or Parade Sword, Model 1860, a pattern that originated during the Civil War and remained in service until 1902. This particular example, however, is an especially high-end variant, featuring an etched nickel-plated blade and numerous gilt brass alloy fittings. Since officers typically purchased their own dress swords, these weapons varied greatly in both craftsmanship and design. The top of one side of the sword is marked with the name of the manufacturer as well as an etched inscription below: THE M.C. LILLEY & CO. COLUMBUS, OHIO Mitchell C. Lilley, who hailed from Columbus, Ohio, began selling these types of swords in 1874. The use of “THE” in the company name didn’t appear until 1882, suggesting this sword dates from the late 19th century. Ads in the Army and Navy Journal with a New York address for M.C. Lilley from 1902 indicate the company likely opened a branch in New York to capitalize on the growing military demand before the Spanish-American War. The blade, which measures 30 ¼ inches, is intricately etched with various U.S. symbols, including the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” beneath an American Eagle, U.S. shields and various designs. This piece remains in excellent condition with the etching clear and only minimal wear on the nickel plating which shows some light signs of aging but no significant damage. The sword has an overall length of 37”and its hilt and "shell" guard are made of gilded bronze or brass, both meticulously engraved. The sword also features a foldaway guard for easier carrying. Most of the original gilding is still intact, lending the sword a striking, polished appearance. The grip, made of lacquered ray skin and ribbed for a secure hold, is in superb condition, with the original twisted brass wire wrapping fully preserved. Accompanying the sword is its original scabbard, crafted from brass and mounted with nickel-plated fittings. The scabbard remains straight with no discernible dents and the plating is in good condition with the characteristic patina of age. This is a very remarkable officer’s dress sword from the Spanish-American War period, ready for display and admiration!
