Description: Staffordshire Pair Dancing Figures These figures represent Thomas Potter in the role of "Ben Backstay" with his dancing partner. Prior to his stage career, TP was enlisted in the active service as a sailor. When he brought his seafaring dances, ballads, and own brand of swashbuckling action to the stage, the Victorian public responded enthusiastically, not only to Cooke's entertainment but to his authenticity as well. The identification of this figure is taken from a lithograph published in 1823 entitled "Mr. T.P. Cooke as "Ben Backstay". Approx 9" H X 3"W.
