Description: The stein depicted in this auction was made by the Reinhold Hanke firm from Germany. The stein is pottery & relief with a pewter lid with a nice finial and pewter thumb. The size is 0.4 L. The form number is 1019. The stein is two tone in color and is called Flirting Scene. Founded in the Westerwald town of Höhr in 1868 by Reinhold Hanke, the firm bearing his name is considered by many to have been a pioneer in the “Historismus” style widely associated with Westerwald steins today. Following Hanke’s death in 1886, the company was run by his wife until 1901, when it was taken over by his son, August Hanke, who managed operations until his death in 1938, at which point production was effectively terminated. For a brief period beginning in 1911, Hanke joined with several other Höhr-Grenzhausen firms in a joint marketing effort called Steinzeugwerke.
