The manuscript, executed by Nicholas Hutchings and William Pipe, sets forth the distribution of holdings in “Hamdon” and “Stoke”. The date within the text is 14th March 1701. On the verso is written: Dat 1st Nov 1701Mr. Tho Paine to Mrs. Betty Pryor Marriage Settlement Thomas Paine (1612-1706) of Yarmouth and Eastham, Cape Cod, a millwright married Elizabeth Pryor (1614-?) in about 1630 and emigrated from England to American in 1635 with his wife. Paine was the son of Cambridge-educated vicar Thomas Payne of Hernhill, Kent, whose family hailed from Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, in East Anglia. Reverend Thomas Paine left full-time ministry in after moving to Massachusetts Colony in Boston where he successfully established himself in business.
