Description: This is an original antique W & L.E. Gurley Railroad compass, it comes fairly complete in its original wooden box This unit seemingly is the top of the line model #226 or a very close variation of it from at least 1862 if not earlier (confirmed from the 1862 Gurley Catalog). It is the only model depicted in the book (ask us about where to find the catalog) that has this design. The compass seems complete, it is made out of brass, it has the original glass on it and is in good shape, has a number of accessories, two standards, and two intact bubble levels. The unit is untested but seems all complete, there is no tripod for it though, even though it comes with the original Jacob staff mounting to fit the tripod. The compass and all the parts are fitting well in the specially made box for it, the unit shows patina and age but really seems to be lightly used thru the years. The key works the lock of the included storage box! This version seems super hard to find and research for such a well-known surveyor compass.
