Description: Rare Antique Old West Cabinet Photo Gun Armed Men Drug Store Cowley County, ARKANSAS CITY, KANSAS. 2nd Hand Stores were the earliest thrift shops and or pawn shops. The store owner of this 2nd Hand Drug Store is shown on the far left, holding the Winchester rifle and with a derringer pistol stuck in his vest near his chest. The store owner is identified as Benjamin Franklin Doughty (August 26, 1850-February 11, 1907), who purchased the store in 1899, while he and his family lived in Newkirk, Oklahoma. The store owner moved he and his family out west because he suffered from TB/tuberculosis. The other armed men were described as "frontiersmen". This photo may possibly have been taken the day of Saturday, May 24, 1902, the day of a double murder suicide where a drunk husband in a jealous rage murders his co-worker by the name of Adam Michael Kinter, age 43, whom he worked with on William F. "Tonk" Smith's Oklahoma ranch, murders his mortually wife and then turns the gun on himself. The man that was shot first that worked with the suspect was helping the suspect's wife in the yard of his wife's mother. The owner of the store sold a 45 Colt pistol to the drunk suspect that same day that was used in the murder suicide. It's believed that the store owner hired men to protect him and his store from being attacked by friends and or family of the suspect that he sold the gun to that day. This photo is featured in the 2023 book by Donald Ray Brookhart, the grandson, titled: "ADDA BLANCHE DOUGHTY BROOKHART: MEMORIES". Adda Blanch Doughty Brookhart (1878-1946) was the daughter of the store owner Benjamin Franklin Doughty shown in the photo holding the rifle to the far left. This book is a great read and a true must read for any true western family story reader and or historian. See newspaper article about the murder suicide in my auction photos which are also NOT included with this auction but were found online to be used for reference purposes. Also shown in my auction photos is a photo of the present location of the former 2nd Hand Store in Ark City, Kansas, a map from the time showing the location of the store, which are also NOT included with this auction. The 2nd man from the left leaning against the pole reminds me of character Uncle Vernon Dursley played by deceased actor Richard Griffiths in the Harry Potter trilogy. The 3rd man from the left with a pistol stuck in the front of his trousers and pulling a pistol from his pocket, reminds me of character Seamus Mcfly, played by actor Michael J. Fox in "Back To The Future Part 3". The photographer stamp is barely seen and the red writing on the backside identifies the photographer as: "G. ELLISON, TRAVELING PHOTOGRAPHER". After some extensive research it was found that the photographer is actually identified as: "J. C. ELLISON, TRAVELING PHOTOGRAPHER" (see 11th auction photo). This item has some wear from age with corner damage, ink spot, staining, soiling and measures approximately 6 1/2 x 4 1/4 inches. Please see auction photos for condition.
