This is a classic architecture print, and looks great in a group of three with the Temple of the Winds, Plates V and VII.James Basire (1730-1802) studied engraving with his father who was an engraver of maps in London. Basire was then apprenticed to engraver Richard Dalton, and accompanied a patron to Rome in order to study the works of Raphael. After his return to London, Basire acquired a reputation for fine engravings of portraits, architecture, and antiquarian scenes. Between 1760 and 1795 Basire was official engraver to the Society of Antiquaries, and was appointed engraver to the Royal Society in 1770, and was a well-respected teacher and engraving master.This is a fine print on thick paper with a cream background.
