Description: Hypatia, [...Or New Foes With an Old Face. By Charles Kingsley. Asprey & Co., LTD. Booksellers and Publishers of London; undated, but previous owners gift inscription is dated 1938. 7.25 x 4.75 inches.] Beautifully printed book by the famous Asprey Publishers. Binding is not signed by Asprey, but this was one of their binderies standard designs. Bound in full Moroccan leather with five, gilt ruled, raised bands, handsome gold tooling in the compartments, on both covers, and on the inside covers! Title page printed with floral motif borders. Gilt tipped pages on all edges. Condition: Good to very good condition. Some foxing on title page and occasional spots and or age toning on page edges; heavier on earlier pages are very light throughout. Leather binding looks amazing and is still very bright; leather hinges, fully intact and there is no exterior damage; very light rubbing on a few small spots, but much much better than expected for a book of this age. Interior binding is tight, but boards are starting to bow; unfortunately, a common problem with Asprey's bindings. Overall, I would say this book is in very good - condition. Next we offer some information form Wikipedia.org on the Novel, followed by a short bio of Hypatia: one of the first female mathematicians, from Egypt. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hypatia, or New Foes with an Old Face is an 1853 novel by the English writer Charles Kingsley. It is a fictionalised account of the life of the philosopher Hypatia, and tells the story of a young monk called Philammon who travels to Alexandria, where he becomes mixed up in the political and religious battles of the day. Although intended as Christian apologia, the novel has a deliberate anti-Catholic tone, and it also reflects Kingsley's other prejudices about race and religion, many of which were typical to the 19th-century. For many years the book was considered one of Kingsley's best novels and was widely read. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Hypatia (born c. AD 350–370; died 415[2]) (English pronunciation: /haɪˈpeɪʃə/ hy-PAY-shə; Ancient Greek: Ὑπατία; Hypatía) was a Greek Alexandrine Neoplatonist philosopher in Egypt who was the first well-documented woman in mathematics.[3] As head of the Platonist school at Alexandria, she also taught philosophy and astronomy.[4][5][6][7][8] As a Neoplatonist philosopher, she belonged to the mathematic tradition of the Academy of Athens, as represented by Eudoxus of Cnidus;[9] she was of the intellectual school of the 3rd century thinker Plotinus, which encouraged logic and mathematical study in place of empirical enquiry and strongly encouraged law in place of nature.[3] According to the only contemporary source, Hypatia was murdered by a Christian mob after being accused of exacerbating a conflict between two prominent figures in Alexandria: the governor Orestes and the Bishop of Alexandria.[10] Kathleen Wider proposes that the murder of Hypatia marked the end of Classical antiquity,[11] and Stephen Greenblatt observes that her murder "effectively marked the downfall of Alexandrian intellectual life".[12] On the other hand, Maria Dzielska and Christian Wildberg note that Hellenistic philosophy continued to flourish in the 5th and 6th centuries, and perhaps until the age of Justinian.[13] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Froo www.froo.com | Froo Cross Sell, Free Cross Sell, Cross promote, eBay Marketing, eBay listing Apps, eBay Apps, eBay Application Track Page Views WithAuctiva's Counter
