Description: Uncut Associated Press teletype news wire copy roll from September 18, 1982. It features reports about the notorious massacre of civilians at the Palestinian refugee camps Sabra & Shatila in Lebanon and other international and national stories in chronological sequence. The roll runs between 16:32 and 21:06 Eastern Standard Time. (EDT Eastern Daylight Time) That's late afternoon to early evening, 4:32 PM to 7:06 PM, for you non-24-hour clock people. I did not measure the number of feet of paper, but there are around 40-45 dispatches on the 42-year-old roll that in include reports on: National Card & Letter Writing Week; Secret Formula for Weed Killer revealed accidentally; Arafat's Appeal to White House & Kremlin to Intervene in Lebanon; UN Response to Massacre; President Reagan expresses outrage at massacre; Israeli Foreign Ministry response; Jordan dispatches peace keeping force; Talks to avert national rail strike; Reagan Admin calls for well-off Medicare recipients to pay; Massacre updates (throughout); World leaders call for end to bloodshed; Gale in Oregon; Civil Rights leaders meet in North Carolina; Honduran siege; Nation's weather; Final edition of 148-year old paper in Buffalo; Massacre update; Rail strike talks update; Bank hostages in Tennessee & FBI; Machine gun attack in Brussels; Moscow response to massacre; Arafat issues appeal; 1500 attend mass for Princess Grace in NYC; Bus strike settled in L.A.; Philippean loyalists on Marcos visit to USA; and Honduran guerrillas threaten to kill hostages. It's an interesting slice of history as it was delivered to subscribing newsrooms as 'the first draft of history' literally churned out of the news machine at the time. To be sure, it is a rare artifact of media ephemera as this content was typically 'rip 'n read' and tossed into the trash at the end of each day, if not sooner. Additionally, wire copy paper itself was not high quality nor meant to last and generally the lowest grade of pulp stock paper with a high acid content, hence it's yellowed appearance. Provenance: The wire copy was originally churned out of the AP teletype machine leased by WBAI Pacifica Radio in New York. All content is copyrighted to the Associated Press. A few minor tears repaired with non-acidic archival book/paper repair tape. Shipping to USA only.
