Loose sheets (as issued) encased in paper-covered portfolio with cloth spine and cloth ties, printed titles on front board, elephant folio (54 x 36 cm), (Table of Contents) + pages 75 – 315. The complete work was published in parts which were then collected and issued in 1902 and again in 1921 in two separate limited edition portfolios: Portfolio One, consisting of pages 1-74 and Portfolio 2, consisting of pages 75 – 315. Both parts were issued as limited edition portfolios of unbound pages encased in paper-covered boards with cloth spine. Part 1, which we do not have, included the Title Page, introductory sections, descriptions of the expedition and some maps and plates. It had a total of 74 pages. Part 2, included in this listing, contains the bulk of the drawings and photographs which document the work and results of the expedition. The portfolio includes the Titles on the front board, the Table of Contents and pages 75 to 315. It consists mostly of full page plates of drawings and photographs (a few folded double page plates). These portfolios should not be confused with the report on the expedition that was published by Macmillan in 1898. The latter was an octavo size volume and the portfolios, besides being folio-size, include much additional material including many more drawings and photographs. The Assos ExcavationsDecember 2006-July 2008 Beginning in 1881, the Archaeological Institute of America sponsored investigations at Assos, a classical site on the Aegean coast of Turkey some 30 miles south of Troy. With its ruined sixth-century B.C. temple atop a rocky promontory overlooking the sea, extensive fortification walls, a large cemetery, and Roman theater, Assos was a promising site. The excavations lasted for only three seasons, investigating and documenting the Temple of Athena, a gymnasium, the agora (with a two-story stoa on one side), the theater, the bouleuterion (council house), and elaborate tombs. Afterward, the finds from the site were divided, as was customary at the time. Sculptures from the Temple of Athena were dispersed, most going to the archaeology museum in Istanbul, but some going to the AIA (and hence into the Museum of Fines Arts, Boston). A few removed earlier are in the Louvre. Today, the Aegean University in Turkey is working at the Assos, conducting some excavations and working on restoration of the Temple of Athena, the theater, and other structures. Very scarce portfolio. CONDITION: Very Good- Portfolio Case and Very Good+ to Near Fine Contents. Case has light shelfwear, moderate corner wear, some rubbing and moderate soil on front board. The Contents page is age toned, has two light horizontal creases and some uneven sunning.
