Condition Both boards are still attached but the spine is missing. There is some small areas of loss of cloth, see picture of front cover, back is similar. Corners are bumped with loss some leather. The spine could be easily replaced and corners repaired. Front board has gilt lettering, and both boards have blind embossing with some gilt "chain" line still present to remaining leather of spine and corners. The inner hinges are cracked. The pages show some age and handling marks. The lower corners of the pages show wear where they have been creased when turning. There are a number of short closed edge tares, this is largely due to the type of paper used. On some of the views, at the end of the title is the word "English" written in pencil in an old hand. On The first free endpaper in old ink is the name Mr John Coultas esq . Isaac Coultas parents were William and Elizabeth Coultas. He was the 13th son. He was born 1810 Yorkshire UK Her emigrated 14th April 1830 with three brothers George, John , and Jacob. He married Ann Coultas daughter of Richard P Coultas.* This family also came to America in 1830. They had six children Richard, John, William, Thomas B, Sarah Elizabeth and Mary Jane. John and William are reported as dead so this is not the "John Coultas" whose name is in the book. Ann Coultas died 39th August 184. Isaac married again to Ann Worwell, no children. * Father of John below, so Ann was John's sister ? There is a biography of John Coultas on page 37 EXTRACT. He was the third son Richard P Coultas and Sarah Coultas. Born 20th October 1815 Yorkshire UK. Emigrated with his father August 1830. He worked his father's 240 acres farm when his father died. He married Miss Mary Pickering a native who came to this country with her step father William Haxby. They had two daughters and four sons. Five of who were still living*(1873) and settled around their parents. Mary Died. He married Miss Mary Dean a native of Cheshire England. They had four sons and five daughters**, eight still living (1873) and all at home. John and Mary were still alive (1873) and both bid fair to live many years. * From internet the names were Thomas P Coultas, Robert, Mary, Henry, and George, ** Isaac James, Mattie May, (wife of Edward Chrisman): Adela, (wife of Garland Overton): Alice Hardwick, (wife of John Kirkland): Sallie Belle, (wife of John A. Obermeyer): William Edgar, Charles Burr, Samuel John, Florence Lulla, and David [Daniel] Brengle."
