Description: Authentic Tibetan rug, saddle 'blanket' or meditation mat.Woven by hand with yak-wool yarns. Unusual Escher-like geometric border pattern. It is handstitched down the center, as you can see on the back, probably to stabilize it. See last photos of back. Has heavy burgundy velvety fabric border either for a small indoor rug or saddle blanket.Measures 32" by 26" or approx 81cm by 66cm.Shows age and wear. I personally bought my collection of small Tibetan handwoven mats and rugs in Lhasa in the late 1990s. I bought about six of these small weavings from a Tibetan who was selling his father's collection at the Jokhang Temple in central Lhasa. The experience of true Tibetan spiritual culture, and the artifacts from it, is no longer accessible. Tibetan tradition is to mend with handwoven fabric along the sides to stabilize the wear on the edges. This one, on the other hand, looks like the heavy velour or velvety fabric on the edges was sewn on to add to the size and prevent wear on the edges. There is also a strip of black & white checkered fabric (very Tibetan Buddhist pattern) on one side where it joins the maroon border, no doubt to stabilize wear. It was like this when I got it in Lhasa.
