Description: AVE MARIA! O MAIDEN, O MOTHER. Lyrics are presented here in a handsome 8" x 10" frame with wall mount and easel-back, in Brand New condition. The lyrics for this hymn are attributed to “Sister M.” A school songbook published in 1900 cites this anthem from an 1862 collection entitled St. Patrick's Catholic Hymnal, so the hymn's origin was certainly prior to 1862. Nicola Montani, editor of the popular St. Gregory Hymnal in 1920, credits the melody as found in a Slovak hymnal and ascribes the lyrics to “Sister M.” Thus it appears that, with no clue as to who she was or where she was from, “Sister M” wished to remain anonymous. Like the writers of many earlier hymns, the only reward this author wanted was to uplift the hearts of people to Christ and His mother. Latin phrases appearing within the lyrics are: Ave Maria = Hail Mary Mater amabilis, ora pro nobis = Lovable Mother, pray for us Ave Sanctissima, Ave purissima = Hail most holy one, Hail most pure one. As for the title “Star of the Sea” given to Mary here and elsewhere, St. Jerome in the 4th century seems to be responsible. Jerome proposed that “Mary” was related to the name “Miriam” (the name of Moses's older sister), and that both names derived from Hebrew meaning “drop of the sea” -- in Latin, stilla maris. A copyist then, accidentally or on purpose, transcribed this as stella maris or “star of the sea.” By the dawn of the Middle Ages, the title had won wide acceptance. In the early 1200s the foundation church of the Carmelite Order in Haifa was named Stella Maris [Star of the Sea]. To sailors in ages past the night stars meant survival. Without the stars, before modern technology, they wouldn’t know where they were going. The stars at sea represented, in a way, their salvation and pointed the way to safety. So, it was concluded, Mary, as Star of the Sea, directs us to safety, to salvation, as she guides us to the safe harbor of her Son.
