Description: MARVEL COMICS Marvel Cinematic UniverseMCU Character First Appearance Key MONICA RAMBEAU becomes PHOTON First introduced as a little girl in Marvel Studios' historically set Captain Marvel (2019) and then as an adult working for the agency known as S.W.O.R.D. in the Disney+ series, WandaVision (2021), the MCU's MONICA RAMBEAU (played by actress Teyonah Parris) is the spitting image of her comic book-inspired character. Although her screen time has been limited to-date, some differences between Monica's in-print character and on-screen character have already emerged, most notably her completely different Origin as well as her longtime association with The Avengers. Still, outside of her physical similarities, the MCU's version of Monica Rambeau has captured the one aspect of the character that's been as troublesome for her on the page as it's shaping up to be on-screen: her super-hero name. From her very introduction in Amazing Spider-Man Annual #16 (1982), Monica Rambeau was known as Captain Marvel -- the second hero use the name, which Monica claimed as the first user had died of cancer earlier the same year, in The Death of Captain Marvel graphic novel (1982). Over the next two decades, Monica would give up being a super-hero for some time, this having no name, only to return to pick a new name - PHOTON - and then change it twice thereafter: first to PULSAR and then to SPECTRUM, her most recent alias. In her ongoing story inside the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Monica Rambeau, despite actively using her powers as a superhero, has still not claimed a name, much like Wanda Maximoff who didn't become her alias, the Scarlet Witch, until six years after her introduction. While the cinematic story has hinted that PHOTON will be Monica's alter ego once she does decide "who she is", that revelation remains on the table for a future Marvel production to fulfill. When that day does come, it's guaranteed that Monica's big moment here -- in AVENGERS UNPLUGGED #5, where she passes the mantle of Captain Marvel to another and becomes PHOTON -- will undoubtedly become as widely collectable as it was when Monica's role in the MCU was first announced. For now, the heat's off just a bit -- and that makes today, more than ever before, an excellent time to give your collection exactly what it deserves.
