BASIL RATHBONE - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 12/17/1949 - HFSID 257222 BASIL RATHBONE The Tony Award winning actor pens this letter regarding a Christmas card from a fan Autograph Letter Signed: "Sincerely/Basil Rathbone", 1p, 6x10. New York City, 1949 December 17. To "Dear Miss Sandmann". In full: "Thanks so much for your letter & Christmas Card. Every good wish to you forts Christmas & the New Year. I am going into rehearsals in a few days for a new play - a very good play. You will read all about it, in due course, in the papers. We may try it out in Boston!" Fine condition. Rathbone may have been talking about a revival of the play, Julius Caesar, which opened at the Arena Theatre on Broadway on June 20, 1950. The play, which featured Rathbone as Cassius, ran for only 31 performances, closing on July 15, 1950. Accompanied by envelope addressed in Rathbone's hand to "Mrs Mary Sandmann/31 Wigglesworth St/Roxbury 20/Mass.", postmarked New York, N.Y., Dec. 17, 1949. Opened at top edge. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition. British actor Basil Rathbone (1892-1967), who appeared on Broadway 23 times and won the 1948 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play (The Heiress), is also known for his film work in period costume dramas. He was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor for playing Tybalt in Romeo and Juliet (1936) and King Louis XVI in If I Were King (1938). He also appeared as Murdstone in David Copperfield (1934), Evremonde in Tale of Two Cities (1935), Pontius Pilate in The Last Days of Pompeii (1936), Karenin in Anna Karenina (1936) and Guy of Gisbourne in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). In 1939, Rathbone was cast as Sherlock Holmes in The Hound of the Baskervilles, the first of 14 screen appearances as Conan Doyle's master detective. He also played Holmes on radio from 1939-1946.
