Description: To the best of my research this fine stamped engraving by Charles Turner entitled BASLE was created in 1807 based on the original etching by Joseph Mallord William Turner. This work was created as one of 71 plates used in the Liber Studiorum and was Plate # 5 of Part 1 of that edition. In geeneral terms the plate impression measurements are 21cm x 27cm and the existing sheet is 31cm x 41cm. I am afraid age has taken its toll on the work in regards to the outer margins which have encroaching staining, but there is no noticeable staining which encroaches into the actual plate margin print area so the work can still be well exhibited in full plate size and even to a degree with visible margins with only minor appearance of discoloration. Signature of both artists are in the plate margin. There was a nice descriptive write up of both the piece and the artists on the verso of the antique original framing and I will include that backing board along with the art work. Along with the artist and the engraver there is additional notation in the lower margin stating "Published as the Act Directs by JMW Turner Harley Street. That makes it a bit unclear to me as to whether this tear sheet came from the portfolio, or if it was a personal publication released by the artist himself. In either case it is a very powerful image with the bridge and landscape city skyline and a very popular acquisition. As always through my Living Estate Sale I include free shipping, a charity donation and utilize the "Best Offer" format for all fair buyer considerations.
