Its purpose extends beyond mere decoration; it serves a utilitarian function deeply rooted in history and religious tradition. In ancient times, during the era of the Talmud, permanent dining tables were not a fixture in households. Instead, when a meal was ready to commence, small trays with legs were placed before each individual who would partake in the meal. On Shabbat, the blessing of Kiddush, which sanctifies the day and is recited over a cup of wine, preceded the start of the meal. Only after the Kiddush blessing would the tables laden with food be presented to the diners. The Jerusalem Talmud and a later Rabbinic authority (Tur) explain the reason behind this sequence. In the hierarchy of blessings, bread holds precedence over wine under ordinary circumstances. Thus, it seems logical the blessing over bread should precede the Kiddush blessing, which incorporates wine. But, because the Kiddush blessing is unique and recited before the meal begins, the bread and other items were not placed before the diners until after Kiddush, so as not to "embarrass" the bread and as a means to avoid this situation. Over the centuries, dining customs evolved, but the predicament concerning the order of blessings persisted. Portable dining tables were replaced by decorative coverings for the Challah. Interestingly, the Passover Seder plate and Matzah covers share the same historical origins. Today, the Challah Cover is a staple at every Shabbat table. An elegant Challah Cover not only adds beauty to your home and dining table but also pays homage to the sanctity of Shabbat with the utmost reverence.
