This newspaper contains a bold banner headline and complete printing of the famous speech given by US General Douglas MacArthur to the US Congress, that ends with the phrase: "...Old soldiers never die, they just fade away..." This is the best display newspaper I have seen with this famous 1951 speech by MacArthur. "Old soldiers never die" is an English language catchphrase, with the full version being "Old soldiers never die, they simply fade away". It is made from a stanza from the soldiers' folklore song Old Soldiers Never Die: Old soldiers never die, Never die, never die, Old soldiers never die, They simply fade away. The phrase was used by general Douglas MacArthur in his April 19, 1951 farewell address to the U.S. Congress (which has become known the "Old Soldiers Never Die" speech): ... but I still remember the refrain of one of the most popular barrack ballads of that day which proclaimed most proudly that "old soldiers never die; they just fade away." And like the old soldier of that ballad, I now close my military career and just fade away, an old soldier who tried to do his duty as God gave him the light to see that duty. General of the Army Douglas MacArthur (January 26, 1880 – April 5, 1964) was an American five-star general and Field Marshal of the Philippine Army. He was Chief of Staff of the United States Army during the 1930s and played a prominent role in the Pacific theater during World War II. He received the Medal of Honor for his service in the Philippines Campaign, which made him and his father Arthur MacArthur Jr. the first father and son to be awarded the medal. He was one of only five to rise to the rank of General of the Army in the US Army, and the only one conferred the rank of field marshal in the Philippine Army. He led the United Nations Command in the Korean War with initial success; however, the controversial invasion of North Korea provoked Chinese intervention. Following a series of major defeats, he was removed from command by President Harry S. Truman on 11 April 1951. Very good condition.
