Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 This book recreates the four separate missions undertaken by the British and the Norwegian Resistance to try and eliminate the production of deuterium oxide, or “heavy water”, a key component of an atomic bomb, by the Norsk Hydro plant in Southern Norway. The three attempts to cripple the plant, by glider troops, parachutists and finally heavy bombing, did some damage, but not enough to stop production, so in early 1944 the Resistance was called upon to destroy a large shipment of heavy water leaving the plant for Germany, which was accomplished by sinking the ferry that it was being carried on across a local fjord. It is still a matter of conjecture whether the Germans could have actually been able to construct an atomic bomb had they had the heavy water, but there was no point in the Allies taking any unnecessary risks, so the deed was done. This interesting description of the whole Norsk Hydro campaign, which lasted three years, is based on survivors’ accounts as well as official German and British records, and is a fascinating glimpse of one of the “behind the scenes” actions during the war. This 1997 Hardcover is in very good condition, with no internal markings and nominal dust jacket wear.
