First Edition. A book of museum quality, this copy belonged to the great film director D.W. Griffith who used it in creating the fabulous massive sets for the ancient Babylon sequence of his masterpiece Intolerance in 1916. On the front flyleaf is stamped in black ink: PROPERTY OF D.W. GRIFFITH - Do Not Remove Without Leaving Receipt - Do Not Keep Over 24 Hours Without Special Permission. The book has pencil annotations throughout noting and highlighting features for visual design, possibly in the hand of the film’s Art Director Walter L. Hall. Of the book’s many illustrating plates, Plate 5 is intentionally loose as it was removed to use in creating the walls of the set for Griffith’s Babylonian sequence in Intolerance. The plate depicts a massive winged bull with the human head of a bearded Babylonian man with a crown. This image which was discovered carved on the walls of King Sargon of Babylon’s palace. This image was directly used in creating two enormous sculptures guarding the gates of Babylon which can be seen in the film. At the top of the plate is hand typed: PERSONAL PROPERTY OF D.W. GRIFFITH - PLEASE DO NOT SOIL OR MUTILATE. On the other side of the plate is hand typed” PROPERTY OF D.W. GRIFFITH - DO NOT MUTILATE, COLOR, OR REMAIN OUT OF LIBRARY OVER TWENTY-FOUR HOURS. 515 pages, octavo, blue cloth stamped in gilt, t.e.g. Very good. Cloth and gilt lettering gold lion on cover decoration bright. Interior clean and bright with b/w photo reproduction plates and folding map. 164 b/w illustrations. enclosed in a custom cloth clamshell box.
