Description: French tissue stereoview of the Vatican reception room. C. 1860s. 3-3/8” x 6-7/8”. Overall good, with light rubbing and wear, primarily along edges and corners of mount. Images remain easy to view. Includes 3 small punctures, with 1 on the left image and 2 on the right. General age-related toning to paper, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. French “hold to light” tissue stereoviews were popular throughout much of the 1860s and 1870s, and utilized very thin sheets of albumen paper, exposed backs, and small holes to help create special effects within the images, including hidden color when held in front of light. Due to their fragile nature, far fewer have survived into the present day than their normal strereoview counterparts. FORN-ABE-MSB-0324-Shelf-736-aj355
