Description: "Chirurgie." An original antique engraving showing various surgical instruments.Taken, I believe from Diderot's important Encyclopaedia, one of four plates related to medicine. The original edition was published in France in 1778, this plate attributed to Benard. There, it is depicted with the images reversed, with the knee on the right-hand side. But this example, on laid paper, is clearly of a similar age. There is a watermark on the sheet (see last photograph). In poor condition, but this is an important record of early surgical instruments. Size: the sheet measures approx. 21cms x 14cms.Condition: In a scruffy condition with stains and tears and loss at the edges, as seen in my photographs. But the images of the various instruments are still clear. Please study the photographs.
