This copy is one of several 'New and Enlarged editions', with a single line border throughout and pagination printed on the bottom right hand corner of each page. With a presentation gilt title stamped to the front board: 'Presented to Miss Harris by the Librarian'. Copiously illustrated throughout by the renowned English mountaineer, explorer, illustrator, and author Edward Whymper, with a coloured frontispiece plate with a protective tissue guard. CONDITION In the publisher's cloth binding with elaborate gilt and black-stamped design, and a presentation gilt title stamped to the front board. Externally, very smart with slight bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Slight rubbing to joints. Front hinge split and tender, with cords showing. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout. Tissue guard to coloured frontispiece detached and creased, but present.
