Canada 1930 First Flight Cover - AAMC 3011W - MEDICINE HAT to MOOSE JAW (2)

Description: Canada 1930 First Flight Cover - AAMC 3011W - MEDICINE HAT to MOOSE JAW1931, March 3 - Inauguration of Regular Prairie Service October 28 Covers (AAMC Catalogue Description): The experimental service having proved the need for the speedy communication provided by air, Western Canada Airways was authorized to fly a route some 1270 miles long, connecting Winnipeg with Calgary by Regina, Moose Jaw and Medicine Hat, and with Edmonton via Regina, saskatoon and North Battleford.Inaugural flights were made on March 3rd and 38 separate and distinct official cachets were provided, uniformly applied in Black at each point. The first scheduled Night Flight took place on the March 3rd Winnipeg to Calgary League schedule for 11:00 p.m. To 5:00 a.m. Mail from Edmonton, battleford and Saskatoon went by rail from Regina to Winnipeg as it missed connections at Regina. The pilots were as follows: Winnipeg to Moose Jaw and return, W.J.Buchanan (covers a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,u,v,x,y,aa, and ak); Moose Jaw to Calgary, F.Roy Brown (b,c.h.i.m,n.o. and w); Calgary to Moose Jaw, H. Hollick-Kenyon (,o,s,t,u,v,x and y); Regina to Edmonton, Mjor D.R. MacLaren (j,k,l,p,q and r); Edmonton to Regina, C.M.G. Farrell (d.e.f.r.ab.ac.ad,ae,af,ag,ah,ai and aj). In 17 of the 38 flown sectors listed, pilots flying different planes transported the mail on separate legs of the sector. Mail dispatched to Calgary included mail for onward surface transmission further west, hence the quantity was unusually large. There were up to four different postmarks and seven different back stamps applied at the various points. First Flight Covers as popular collectiblesThe 1920’s were a time of great interest in everything to do with aviation. They were also a time when stamp collecting was a very popular hobby. In August 1928, the Canadian National Exhibition decided to organize an air show, as part of the celebrations for its 50th Anniversary. The events included special flights carrying mail to Toronto, one from Windsor, and another from Quebec City, on the opening day of the air show. A fee of 5 cents was charged for each envelope carried on these flights, compared to the normal cost of 2 cents to send a letter at that time. In return for this fee, a commemorative cachet was applied to each envelope carried. The response was terrific! Over 30,000 pieces of mail were carried on the opening day flights, and more than 27,000 on the return flights from Toronto to Windsor and Quebec City at the end of the air show. After this, the Post Office offered a commemorative cachet each time it inaugurated a new airmail service, and also for some special events. Combined shipping offered on purchases made within 5 days! You can reduce your shipping cost per item by bidding on several lots. Shipping is FREE on additional stamp lots won if they are shipped in the same envelope! In order to take advantage of this offer, do NOT pay for each winning bid, one by one. Request an invoice from me when your bidding is finished and pay for all winning lots together.
