Description: Capitol International Airways was founded by Jesse Stallings as Capitol Airways on June 11, 1946.Initially the company provided only aircraft sales, maintenance and flight training services.On February 24, 1964, Capitol Airways was issued a certificate for Atlantic charter authority under terms of the Transatlantic Charter Investigation. The carrier also received authority to conduct charter operations in the Caribbean on September 30, 1966. Through the late 1970s the nonscheduled operations, which included group tour charters, military contract flights, and aircraft leasing services, provided the bulk of the carrier’s activities.The name of the carrier was changed to Capitol International Airways on March 22, 1967, and the company became a publicly owned corporation at that time. In September 1978, Capitol International Airways was granted authority to conduct scheduled services.Capitol International Airways utilized DC-8 equipment to inaugurate service to Boston and Chicago. On June 19, 1979 Flight #203 departed Brussels and flew to Boston, and then to Chicago, arriving on the same date. On June 20, 1979 Flight #204 departed Chicago and arrived on the same date at Boston. It then flew to Brussels, arriving on June 21. This cover was carried on the inaugural Capitol International Airways flight from Boston, Massachusetts to Chicago, Illinois (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as CL-D3W.
