Description: Celtic Astrological Ogham Necklace, made by Amethyst, Dublin, Ireland. This range of Celtic Astrology pendants has each month is represented in the ancient ogham script which was traditionally carved in stone. Here it is cast in sterling silver on an 18" chain, attractively displayed in our light green or purple case boxes with enclosed full colour leaflet to explain the symbols. These are cast pendants, and vary slightly, and sometimes reflect the casting variance with a bit of a rough surface, so not perfectly smooth all over [the front], necessarily. The rough areas, if any, sort of add to the rustic look, in my opinion. [The backs are fine.] Ogham Script, sometimes known as the Celtic Tree Alphabet, was carved on trees & in stone during early medieval times. While all surviving examples of Ogham are inscriptions on stone, sticks, stakes & trees were probably more commonly used. It is thought to have been created by Irish Scholars or Druids to provide a secret means of communication. Ogham Script consists of twenty alphabet symbols. Celtic tree astrology is based on the belief that our personality traits are influenced by the time of our birth as represented each month by a sacred tree, each tree symbolising an attibute or essence. Each month of the year has an associated Tree or Plant. So, this is almost like a birthstone, and makes a very unique gift. NOTE: The size of the pendant is probably best suited for a woman, or even a young lady, except for the old stock in April, large. I wear this size, which has not been made for at least 10 years. NOTE: If you are an 'April', and like a large one, you are in luck! Even if you do not care about the month, it is a nice unusual necklace. Originally, Amethyst made this size sterling pendant, then dropped down to the size offered here, the other months listed, including an April. [These newer ones are smaller. The original is 1 inch tall x 1/2" wide.] l NOTE: Amethyst, Dublin, no longer makes any .925 Sterling Silver Ogham necklaces. We can get no more. [They still are made in pewter, but we will not carry those.] The chain is 18" sterling silver, and the pendant is 3/4" tall.
