Description: CHARLESTON SC - SERGEANT JASPER BUILDING, DEMOLISHED POSTCARD 1980s In 1951, the Charleston Evening Post reported that the Sergeant Jasper building was Charleston’s “first large modern apartment building.” The paper went on to proclaim that the apartment’s open house event “attracted a crowd estimated at 10,000 persons.” The building was erected on filled-in mud flats adjacent to the Ashley River a decade before Lockwood Boulevard was built. For more than six decades the building provided multifamily affordable housing for many residents. The building, taken down in March 2018, is the largest ever razed in Charleston.
