Description: This is a document issued by the Union Army after the end of the Civil War. It is almost 160 years old. This is an authentic document from the Civil War.This is NOT a reprint or a reproduction.This is a "general orders" document, which was issued on October 9, 1865, by Edward Davis Townsend (1817-1893), who was the Assistant Adjutant General of the Union Army at that time.Townsend later served as the Adjutant General of the U.S. Army for eleven years, from 1869 to 1880. This particular order is concerned with the distributionof "the Regiments of Regular Artillery ". PLEASE NOTE:This order explicitly states on page three that it is issued "by command of Lieutenant General Grant ". This document makes reference in several places to Fort Jefferson, which is located in the Dry Tortugas,about seventy miles west of Key West. This document also mentions General William Sherman,General Joseph Hooker, General B. H. Hill, and General Philip Sheridan. Please note that this document does NOT have any handwriting or signatures. It is a printed document. Folded, this document is about 7" by 5". It unfolds into a 7" by 10" document (see scans),with printing on both sides. It is in good condition.
