Description: Plymouth, North Carolina on the Roanoke River was a strategic base for Union Army operation in Eastern NC. In April, 1864 Confederate forces under General Robert Hoke besieged the Union garrison which was defended by Union Gunships. After a 3 day siege the Confederate ironclad ram CSS Albemarle shelled the post, forcing the surrender of the garrison including the men of the 101st Pennsylvania Volunteers. An Original Union Army Pass issued at HQ Sub-District of the Albemarle, Plymouth, North Carolina, April 7, 1864 allowing a civilian to pass to Roanoke Island. The Pass is signed by Lt Davis F Beegle, 101st Pennsylvania as ADC. Ten days later Lt Beagle and the rest of the 101st were captured after the siege & battle. The young officer was confined as a POW at "Camp Sorghum", Columbia, South Carolina, so-named because LT Beegle and his comrades lived under terrible conditions, surviving on sorghum and cornmeal, in this makeshift prison with no walls or shelter, only a "deadline" perimeter. 1p The 5 x 2.55" ptd/ink Pass is nicely printed and in VG condition, with minor age stains and lightly folded. Comes w service info for LT Beegle who survived the War. Beegle was a fellow POW of SHM Byers who composed the song "Sherman's March to the Sea" while at Camp Sorghum. 15.00 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Welcome to my Ebay Auctions and Ebay Store.
