Description: Original Civil War Era Union Army French Import Mle 1842/59 Sword Bayonet for the Model 1842 Rifle - Original - Very NICE Condition - RAREUp for sale is an Original Civil War Era Union Army French Import Mle 1842/59 Sword Bayonet for the Model 1842 Rifle. Bayonet only, no scabbard. This bayonet has marking on the back edge of the blade, showing it as a Mle.1842 and manufactured in 1863. There are some numbers stamped on the guard, these would correspond to the rifle to which the bayonet was fitted. This is the 2nd pattern with the change from a leaf spring button to an internal coil spring release button, this change started in 1859, thus the Mle 1842/59. The blade and handle are in Excellent Condition. The blade is bright. No rust or pitting on the blade. Some discoloration spots of the blade. The bayonet is approximately 27 1/2" overall length, with a 22 3/4" blade. The muzzle ring opening is approximately 0.855" in diameter. The item is used, please see photos for details and condition. This is a Very NICE example of this bayonet.These bayonets were imported from France by both the Federal Government for the Union Army and the Confederate States for the Confederate Army.
