Description: Classical Myths That Live Today (Hardcover 1967) Frances Sabin Ex Library Copy from Santa Cruz Public Library. PREFACE TO THE 1958 EDITION The classical myths which appear in this book are ancient indeed. Their influence upon the world's literature has been and continues to be extensive. Allusions to them appear con stantly in advertising copy within newspapers and magazines, and on the air. A knowledge of these myths, like a knowledge of the Bible, is a mark of an educated person and a key to under standing many aspects of the world of ideas and the culture of our society. Moreover, the myths are in themselves lively and stimulating literature. Since the classical myths are timeless and unchanging, it may at first glance seem profitless to revise a textbook on them. Though the myths themselves do not change, their use and influence in today's world is constantly changing. Advertising copy based on them becomes obsolete, books containing refer ences to them go out of print, and a host of new uses of mythology comes into being. So the 1958 revision of CLASSICAL MYTHS THAT LIVE TODAY was undertaken to bring up to date all the material in the project sections. All reference works and suggested readings in this revision are given in new and readily available editions. Instances of the uses of mythological figures or symbols in art, sculpture, and architecture include such modern examples as the effective decorations in the Lunt-Fontanne Theater. Illustrations, espe cially those concerned with the use of mythological concepts in advertising and design, are in keeping with modern trends. In short, the fresh, new cover of the 1958 edition is indicative of the perhaps less obvious changes that have been made within. Persons who have not previously used CLASSICAL MYTHS THAT LIVE TODAY will profit by reading the editor's and author's prefaces, by examining the present-day allusions at the end of each chapter, and by studying the extensive section on Projects, pages xxiv-xliii of the Appendix. These sections provide students with concrete activities that emphasize the living quality of the mythology of Greece and Rome. There are five parts of the Appendix section - I. Eng lish Words and Expressions, II. Literary Allusion, III. Art and Design, IV. The Business World, and V. Cartoons. The fact that these parts are presented pictorially and that suggestions for sources for collecting similar material are included will, it is believed, continue to prove stimulating to the student's interest. Special acknowledgment is made to the following persons or firms for permission to reprint poems found in the book: Pro fessor Ralph Linton for Two Towns; Dorothy Dow for To Ala lanta; Roselle Mercier Montgomery for The Moderns and Pan; and Frances Reubelt and "The Classical Outlook" for To a Grasshopper. Appreciation is also expressed for the help offered in various ways by teachers, librarians, and members of associations and commercial firms whose cooperation has contributed toward making the illustrations so successful and functional a part of the book as a whole.
