Like experienced chefs using the Maine environment as their oven, our staff works tirelessly to ensure each batch of compost meets the rigorous quality standards required of organic growers. Thank you for your interest in our products. Your plants are going to love them! Yes, there really are lobster shells in our Quoddy Blend Lobster Compost! Coast of Maine's Quoddy Blend Lobster Compost is really made with lobster shells! Lobster shell waste, that would normally be thrown away, or tossed into landfills, is locally sourced, and brought in by the truck load to our production facility up in Marion Maine. It is blended into high quality, clean wood fiber, blueberry brush, and culled blueberries from local Maine blueberry harvesters. It is moved and formed into a windrow, where the composting process begins! It takes another 4-6 months of testing, turning, aerating, and temperature checking, before it is ready to bag. The result is a dark-brown, complex soil that drains well and is ideal for conditioning beds, borders, vegetable gardens, herbs and annuals! Quoddy Blend Lobster Compost is OMRI listed for use in organic gardens. Available in 1cf bags. Quoddy Blend is made in Maine using real lobster shells When the lobster shells arrive, they are promptly blended with the blueberry brush and wood fiber. They are moved and formed into a windrow, which is a straight pile about 12’ wide, 6’ tall and several hundred feet long. An additional 4-6 months of churning, aerating and checking temperatures is required before we are ready to bag. The beautiful calcium and chitin-rich soil is bagged up at our production facility in Marion, Maine and shipped out to gardeners all across the US. Lobster shells are a rich source of calcium and chitin Lobster shells are a rich source of calcium and chitin. Calcium helps plants produce strong cell walls, which in turn, increases plant vigor and disease resistance. Chitin serves as a rich food source for the soil microbes and the soil ecosystem. Most recent studies point out that chitin is also a good inducer of defense mechanisms in plants and helps them develop healthy immune systems. Plants that benefit from extra calcium include: apples, beans, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cherries, grapes, lettuce, melons, peaches, pears, peppers, potatoes, and tomatoes.
