After breaking off a technical and commercial apprenticeship at the age of 17, Wilhelm Kuhnert was a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts from 1883 to 1887 on a scholarship. From his residence in Berlin, he traveled to the north, Egypt, East Africa and India to carry out landscape and animal studies. His favorite motif was the African lions. In 1901, Animal Life of the Earth, written by him as an illustrator together with the zoologist Johann Wilhelm Haacke, was published. In 1903 he worked for the Cologne chocolate producer Ludwig Stollwerck with designs for Stollwerck collector's pictures and, among other things, designed series of pictures for the scrapbooks No. 6. and no. 11.
