Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Commemorative medallion issued for the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition at San Francisco. These were awarded to various individuals for specific service, notoriety, displaying artworks at the Expo, as well as designing various buildings, etc, and are separate from those given "For Service" to Exposition Company employees, or for winning an individual judged award. Most examples I have seen & owned over the years are unengraved, which suggests that many were struck in preparation of being awarded, but remained un-issued. Issued pieces likely stayed closer to home within the families of the named. Known engraved examples were awarded to political figures, bankers and other "money men", well known architects involved with developing the Expo grounds, various artists, etc. This particular piece was given to David Hilger of Lewistown, MT (misspelled "Lewiston" on the actual piece). Mr. Hilger was an important rancher in Central Montana as well as an officer of the First National Bank of Lewistown, later being heavily involved with the Montana Historical Society. He was thought of enough to have a separate community named after him, Hilger, MT, established around 1911 (just north of Lewistown). Finding an intact engraved and awarded example is tough, let along one that can be traced to a specific historical figure. Struck by Shreve Jewelers of the City, signed in micro lettering on the Reverse. 38mm, struck in Bronze and antiqued, the extreme high relief of the Obverse (Eagle side) tends to work against survival of Gem pieces. This displays very minor wear to the Eagle's chest and some very minor, very light edge hits, not readily visible but mentioned for accuracy. These were originally issued in a small green box. I have included some images of one of these boxes for the sake of general information, however a box is NOT included with this listing (the box shown is NOT related to this particular medal, having been previously sold). Medals in box are very scarce to flat out rare. Regardless, an interesting piece for the collector of PPIE memorabilia, or interested in Western history. Priced based upon my belief of its importance to same. Please Note: We require payment within four days of purchase, unless you contact us for other arrangements in advance of purchase.
