Description: A miniature of native copper from a world-renowned copper mining district, the Keweenaw Peninsula, Michigan. This particular specimen is from the Central mine in Michigan, and it has noticeable partial crystal faces and a growth pattern. Do note this specimen has been cleaned. The Central mine is located on a fissure deposit and consists of 4 shafts and two adits. The Central Mining Company was organized in 1854 and had the distinction of being the first mine to turn a profit in its first year of operation. Work continued until 1898, when all operations ceased. It was sold to the Frontenac Copper Company in 1905 and later absorbed by Calumet & Hecla. In its 44 years of operation, the Central produced 51 million pounds (23134 metric tons) of refined copper and a large amount of silver. This mine is a favorite of collectors for the wide variety of minerals that can be found. Dimensions are 4.3x1.4x3.1cm - 1¾x½x1¼in. Please note the centimeter cube and inch bar for scale.
