Description: DESCRIPTION: Asiaticum Aurea Maculate is a spectacular and elegant crinum that has small white spots on the leaves. The foliage is very unique and the main reason to grow this bulb. The leaves are as attractive as any of the 1000 plus crinum that we have in our collection. The leaves look like someone splattered white paint on them. This will not grow true from seed and seedlings will only have solid green leaves, so the only way to preserve the white leaf spots is to obtain a vegitative offset from the original bulb. One other nice feature about this crinum is that it is actually a miniature form and only a fraction of the size of crinum asiaticum. We have observed as many as 26 flowers on 18" tall scapes. Very few crinum multiply by vertical fission, but this does. Instead of forming small bulbs around the basal plate (bottom where the roots come out), it divides vertically into 2 or 3 new, full-size plants. Thus, this is only offered as a blooming size bulb. They are extremely rare and only grown by a few specialized collectors here in the United States. Because it reproduces slowly and splitting only about once a year, the bulbs are very expensive. These bulbs can live for decades, and this particular bulb will be a prize in your collection in a few years. BACKGROUND: Our original bulbs came from another specialized collector and we do not have any other information about how or where this bulb was discovered. GROWING CONDITIONS: This bulb will thrive in full sun and needs good draining soil. Here in northeast FL, zone 9, it blooms in May and June. The leaves stay green all year but will suffer some damage from frost or freezing temperatures. It is more cold sensitive than most crinum, similar to asiaticum. It is very easy to grow requiring no special care. It will probably survive zone 8 outside, but I would still grow it in a pot anywhere below zone 9 and protect it from freezing temperatures. It will tolerate extended dry periods. Crinum bulbs will survive very long periods out of the ground if left to dry properly. This would make an excellent container plant in colder climates. In order to divide the bulbs, it is usually necessary to dig out the entire clump and cut the bulbs apart vertically with a sharp knife. Other bulbs that usually reproduce by vertical fission are asiaticum, procerum and pedunculatum. We offer all of these for sale. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a large, blooming-size bulb, at least 4 years old which should bloom within 1 year. The roots are well developed so it should transplant easily. This is a very exclusive crinum. Bulbs will be freshly dug and shipped bare root. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom. Jumbo bulb – has bloomed at least 2 years, close to the maximum size for that particular plant (6+ years old) Large bulb - should bloom this year or next (3+ years old, close to, or at blooming size) Medium bulb - should bloom in 1-2 years (at least 2 years old) Small bulb - should bloom 2-4 years (current year or 1-2 year old offset) Seedling bulb - started from seed (usually in its first year of growth unless otherwise stated) PHOTOS/ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: These are pictures of our plants, so you know exactly what they look like and what you will receive. The photos show the plant in various stages of growth. Please feel free to contact us for additional information, and click on "Me" following our star rating.
