Description: DESCRIPTION: Sunbonnet is a crinum wonder bulb and the largest bulb we have in our large collection! It is one of 4 absolutely superb sister seedlings (all different seeds from the same cross). Although it is not as tall, the bulbs grow to 9" in diameter, the same size as an official soccer ball, if you can imagine that! The flowers are a dark "red", much darker than most crinum such as Ellen Bosanquet. The flowers are also very large, over 5" in diameter. Sunbonnet has a strong scape and high bloom count and more of a spreading habit than its sister, Super Ellen (see our listing). It will not start forming offsets until it is about 5 years old, and over the next few years it can produce high numbers of new offset bulbs. This is a true horticultural marvel and anyone that likes beautiful flowers would be happy to have it in their collection We have observed as many as 24 flowers on 36" tall scapes (the hybridizer reported having scapes to 4' tall with 6" diameter flowers). The leaves will grow to over 5' long and mature bulbs will reach about 9" in diameter weighing over 20 pounds. Sunbonnet has never set seed for us (only Super Ellen has but with much difficulty). Ours have bloomed in January, April, May, June, August, September and October here in zone 9, northeast Florida. Eventually we expect blooms from at least March-October every year. This is being offered by us on eBay for the first time in 2014. Currently we grow over 1000 varieties of crinum and have one of the largest collections in the world including about 350 of our own hybrids. BACKGROUND: Sunbonnet was hybridized by Tom Perry (Sunquest Seeds) and there were 4 seeds given the names Sunbonnet, Super Ellen, Charisma, and Pink Floyd (we offer limited quantities of all of these varieties, each is wonderful in its own right). These are a hybrid of crinum bulbispermum pollen back-crossed onto Ellen Bosanquet (the seed parent). Ellen Bosanquet is a hybrid about 100 years old that has never been duplicated. Nobody is exactly sure of it's parentage but it is most likely crinum scabrum and crinum moorei or scabrum and J C Harvey. In any case the DNA lined up just right in this cross and resulted in 4 great crinum. Sunbonnet is the darkest red of the four. Super Ellen (Bosanquet) is the tallest and all are impressive. GROWING CONDITIONS: Bulbs thrive on rich, loamy ground. This should do fine to Zone 7B but will require winter protection in colder areas. It will grow fine in a pot, but would have to be kept out of freezing weather. DESCRIPTION OF ITEM FOR BID: You are bidding on a Jumbo, blooming-size bulb at least 6 years old and about 4" in diameter which should bloom within 1 year. Because of its size and weight the selling price is higher to cover the extra shipping costs. It should transplant easily. The bulbs will be freshly dug and shipped bare root. WE SIZE OUR BULBS APPROXIMATELY BY AGE AS FOLLOWS: A few varieties can take 6 years or more to bloom.
