Description: DC COMICS Whether they're Infinite or Final or Dark or what-have-you, DC Comics has seen its fair share of Crisis crossovers since the Original dropped nearly 40 years ago, and over time, they've developed several things in common. For instance, in each of these line-wide events, the many heroes and villains of the DCU are drawn together to stand against a threat of cosmic proportions -- an unseen entity from beyond responsible for manipulating certain characters and events in order to fulfill its desire of annihilating reality. In essence, each Crisis series is a metatextual metaphor: the publisher needs to clean house, and nothing could pose more of an existential threat to characters on a page than a publisher brandishing a pair of scissors and an eraser. Of course, other commonalities between the Crisis events also exist. The titles almost always have the word 'Crisis' in them -- a dead giveaway but, for the uninitiated, worth mentioning. In these events, worlds are created and worlds are destroyed, where 'worlds' means 'entire universes', generally every universe ever written about in a DC comic book. Also: the Teen Titans' newly reconstructed "Titans Tower", wherever it may be located, explodes, once again totally destroyed to to the surprise of nobody. Japan's DOCTOR LIGHT is back (after having been AWOL since the previous Crisis) , and the story often ends with one more SUPERBOY than it had at the start. One thing that the many Crisis do not have in common, however, is that none of them are nearly as good as the very first Crisis -- the Crisis on Infinite Earths. To say that CROI is a visual and story-telling masterpiece would be an understatement. GEORGE PEREZ and MARV WOLFMAN's plan of many months came to fruition in the Twelve-Issue Maxi-Series that debuted in 1985, and DC's answer to the concurrently-published Marvel series Marvel Super-Heroes Secret Wars blew it and its Beyonder out of the water. DC's plan was a retcon and relaunch that was a sweeping, expertly executed act of house-cleaning done with high-stakes drama, emotion and lasting consequence. It served a purpose much, much higher than building out a toy brand or generating crossover sales. It is a lasting testament to two outstanding creators and a comics Universe full of rich characters and their storied, unified history. Crisis on Infinite Earths, of course, is also where all those later commonalities were established. DOCTOR LIGHT -- the fourth DC character to use the name but the first female to do so -- makes her FIRST APPEARANCE here, in CROI #4. The British "Hellblazer" JOHN CONSTANTINE get his SECOND APPEARANCE here as well. And while you're too late to see the Titans lose their Tower, do keep an eye out for a Superboy.
