Description: C. S. Lewis. THE WEIGHT OF GLORY. Greensboro, North Carolina: The Unicorn Press, 1977. Wrappered, 6.75” x 7.5”, 23 (vii + 16) uncut pages. Special Limited Edition, stated #48 of 250 printed. Conserved in Brand New condition. C. S. Lewis preached this sermon at Solemn Evensong in the twelfth-century Oxford University Church of St. Mary the Virgin on 8 June 1941, before one of the largest congregations ever assembled there in modern times. His secretary, Walter Hooper, opined that the sermon was “so magnificent . . . that I dare to consider it worthy of a place with some of the Church Fathers.” It includes such memorable insights as these: “There are no 'ordinary' people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilisations – these are mortal. . . . But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit – immortal horrors or everlasting splendours. . . . Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbour is the holiest object presented to your senses.” Due to an arrangement with the copyright holders, this edition was limited to 250 copies, and it was never reprinted. It includes a short Preface by Paul Ford (sub nomine Peter Ford, his name with the Order of St. Benedict), author of the acclaimed Companion to Narnia, as well as an Introduction by the late Erik Routley, author and musicologist with seven hymn credits in The Hymnal 1982. Dr. Routley was present as an Oxford undergraduate in 1941 to witness Lewis preach this sermon. The book itself was designed by Alan Brilliant, Director of the Unicorn Press, who handset the type, hand-printed the book by letterpress, and hand-bound each copy. The paper is “Gazen,” a handmade Japanese mulberry paper. The book was bound in the Chinese style in “Fabriano,” a handmade Italian paper. This copy is enclosed in a numbered presentation envelope and has been conserved in an acid-free, archival quality protective jacket. An altogether rare and valuable gift or addition to one's library. In recent years one other copy of this work was offered, also in new condition, for $2,900.00 elsewhere on the internet. As of the present listing, this limited edition does not appear available in any other searched database.
