About Montauk Point Lighthouse The oldest lighthouse in New York State, Montauk Point Lighthouse has graced the shores of Long Island for over 200 years. Authorized by President George Washington in 1792, the original octagonal tower was built of Connecticut sandstone and stood 80 fee tall. The structure was seven feet thick at its base, tapering to a width of three feet at the top. A 10-foot by 10-foot iron lantern atop the structure was first lit in 1796. The President himself predicted the lighthouse would stand for 200 years; time has proven him right. Montauk Point Lighthouse is located at the eastern end of Long Island, majestically presiding over the Atlantic Ocean. It guides the way for scores of whaling ships, submarines, steamers, and fishing vessels.
