Description: Daphne du Maurier Historical Biography of Sir Francis Bacon The Winding Stair Daphne du Maurier is known worldwide for her novels Rebecca and My Cousin Rachel. She is equally at home in the art of biography and books of her home area of Cornwall in SW England. In this account of the last twenty-five years in the life of Sir Francis Bacon, Daphne du Maurier shows the incredible amount of activity and purpose that propelled the day-to-day life of a man who was not only a writer, philosopher, thinker and scientist, but also a doer. It is the complex world at the end of the Elizabethan era and the reign of James the I that the author brings to life in THEWINDING STAIR. The title is taken from one of Sir Francis Bacon’s essays: “All Rising to Great Place is by a winding Staire.” The book is in very good condition. There is one inscription in the first cover page where I wrote to my Mother when I gave her this book in 1979. There are no other marks in the book and the cover is also in good condition. This is the first edition in the United States of America. There are five pictures in vivid color and seventeen black and white illustrations. On page 59 there is a picture of The Right Honourable Sir Francis Bacon, Lord High Chancellor of England. On the back cover there is a photo of Daphne du Maurier. I am happy to answer any questions you may have. Thank you for considering my very interesting account of one of England’s influential figures.
