While the DCX2496 is an excellent digital crossover, its main drawback is that it only provides analog outputs through its built-in DACs. This modification kit transforms it into a fully digital device. (The output sampling frequency is fixed at 96kHz.) With this modification, you can use affordable full-digital amplifiers like the Panasonic SA-XR70 or SA-XR50 to create 3-way, 6-way, or even 9-way digital dividing systems at a low cost. Alternatively, you can set up a multi-channel system using your preferred DACs for each channel. Compared to other digital amp setups like the TacT Audio M2150 + S2150 multi-way system (which has a built-in crossover), a configuration using XR50 amps with a modified DCX2496 tends to produce a sharper, fresher sound. Honestly, it's a matter of preference between the mild-sounding TacT and the solid XR50. You could argue that it's a choice between a 1.5 million yen TacT system or a 150,000 yen XR50 setup (including modification costs), depending on your preference. The modification itself takes about two hours for someone with moderate skills. It involves hijacking the DCX2496 circuit, routing clock and data signals to this board via lead wires, and extracting 3-way S/PDIF outputs (coaxial or optical). The kit includes parts for coaxial output, but the board also supports optical output with additional components. This modification allows for greater flexibility in digital audio system design and potentially improved sound quality by maintaining a digital signal path throughout the system.Please refer to the attached manual for detailed work procedures. When using a single DCX2496, you can achieve up to a 3-way system. With two units, you can create a 6-way system, and with three units, you can set up a 9-way full digital multi-channel environment. Of course, you're not limited to combining it with full digital amplifiers. You can also pair it with multiple DACs of your choice to create a custom divider for use with conventional analog amplifiers. Even after modification, analog outputs remain available for simultaneous use. For example, if you currently only have one DAC, you can use the digital output for high frequencies (Digital output → DAC → Power amp) and the analog output for low frequencies (Analog output → Power amp). Traditionally, channel dividers significantly influenced sound quality. However, by delegating pure band division to the lossless digital section and choosing your own DAC for the crucial conversion, you can easily obtain a high-quality channel divider that would typically be very expensive. I find it more useful than my analog channel divider, the Accuphase F-25. Even Accuphase's digital channel divider, the DF-55, which costs 780,000 yen, doesn't have digital outputs, so this modification offers excellent cost performance.
