Description: Offering two Art Deco 1920-1930s composition faced dolls that are wearing their top hats and Puttin On The Ritz! Also included is the book “ A Day With Charlie McCarthy” (1938). 1. The 28” purple cloth bodied, composition head flapper bed doll or boudoir doll is from the 1920s and wears a tuxedo very similar to her beaus—Charlie McCarthy! She has a stiffened shirt that is authentic period tuxedo wear based on real tuxedos of this period! Really exceptional! There are rhinestone miniature “real” cuff links that insert through holes specific for the cuff links in the stiffened cuffs, and matching stiffened collars that extend down the front of the black antique fabric tuxedo jacket. There is some shredding on the arms of the jacket with some reinforcement added— but hidden by the boa she wraps around herself and not a distraction. This doll is about 100 years old!! There are matching tux pants with a red grosgrain cummerbund (added later probably to replace shredded silk) above the antique black velvet waistband. The blue boa has a brass ring that slips over the finger of her purple cloth arm and stays in place— and compliments the blue feathers in her top hat. There is a rhinestone attached to one of the feathers adorning her top hat— which further compliments the rhinestone Art Deco buttons on her tux shirt and rhinestone cuff links! This flapper holds a cigarette holder— and in addition to DARING to wear men’s wear— she smoking!! She has her original blond mohair wig There is some hair loss at the back—no doubt rubbed off by the amazingly well made top hat she wears! The top hat is a hard hat top hat that is made with extraordinary hand construction with a band and multi feathers. Her shoes fit on her purple bodied legs/feet and are real leather and stamped “made in Germany” and attach with two toned black silk ribbons. Now her face!! The composition is hand painted with blue heavy eyeshadowed eyes with the color heightened by the blue boa and blue feathers in her top hat! She has rosy cheeks and some darkening on her nose which may have been repaired. She is very flirtatious— but She only has eyes for Charlie! They are ready for a night out on the town “Putting on the Ritz”! 2. Charlie McCarthy was created in 1939 by the Efanbee company. He is marked on the back of his neck “Edgar Bergen Charlie McCarthy An Effanbee Product”. He has a composition head, hands (painted to look like gloves) and feet ( painted and molded tuxedo shoes). He has a cloth body. He wears a black tuxedo with black satin stripes down the sides of the legs, and he wears a stiffened tux shirt, collar and bow tie. He has his original top felt top hand with band. Charlie’s monocle remains factory attached and his mouth opens with the back pull string and closes manually. His paint is in good condition. He is 20” tall. He is mad for his flapper girlfriend and they make an amazing display together! 3. A DAY WITH CHARLIE McCARTHY is Copyrighted 1939 by McCarthy, Inc. by Eleanor Packer with Edgar Bergen’s Advice on the Art of Ventriloquism There are 32 pages. There is a story about Edgar Bergen and Charlie performing in a Hollywood film. Photographs This book is in very good condition! The soft faced boudoir doll shown in one photo with the two dolls offered here (and described above) is listed separately and shows very well as a group— as she is a 1920s French molded fabric faced bed doll and also a smoker. This group would be a great example of the ROARING TWENTIES Art Deco style! The pocket watch is not included but for a display idea.
