It was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1980 due to the mansion built on the estate by the heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post in 1927. Trump was denied constantly by the Commission, but this was one of the few exceptions he was granted approval. The very same year this letter was sent, Trump turned Mar-a-Lago into a private club and sued Palm Beach County for $75 million in an attempt to move the airport away from the club to divert the noise, it ended in a settlement with the county agreeing to lease Trump 280 acres of land on Summit Boulevard where he built his International Golf Club.
