Signed: "Dorothy Dandridge" At this time Dandridge was about to make the best film of her career with MGM, Carmen Jones, Billy Rose's Black American updating of Bizet's opera Condition: very good Dorothy Dandridge was African-American film and theatre actress, singer and dancer. She isperhaps best known for being the first black actress to be nominated for an Academy Award forBest Actress in a Leading Role for her performance in the 1954 film Carmen Jones, co-starring Harry Belafonte. Also nominated for a Golden Globe for Porky and Bess (1959), starring opposite Sidney Poitier. Sadly Dandridge died young, age 42, of a drug overdose.
