Description: Offered for sale and just unpacked from a box that was packed away some 25-35 years ago comes this GORGEOUS Butter Dish & Cover in the "Croesus" pattern of Early American Pattern Glass. I identified this pattern in the excellent reference book "Early American Pattern Glass 1850-1910" by Bill Jenks & Jerry Luna (copyright 1990). According to Mr. Jenks and Mr. Luna, this pattern was produced in emerald green and in purple by the McKee Glass Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania around 1897 - it certainly appears in their 1901 catalogue. In clear, this pattern was manufactured by the Riverside Glass Works (pattern #484). The bottom or base of the butter dish measures 7 3/4 inches across. With the lid on, this appears to stand 5 1/2 inches tall. Without the base, the lid stands about 4 1/2 inches tall. There is gilt or gold trim around the outer edge of the base and outlining the "croesus" pattern. There is also gilding on the top finial, which is a fan. The condition of this butter dish / cheese dish is EXCELLENT with no chips, no cracks, and no damage. There is slight roughness on one of the scallops of the scalloped underplate but the gilding / gold trim is intact and you can only feel it with your finger. ***According to Jenks & Luna, Croesus was reproduced jointly by the Guernsey Glass Company (Cambridge, Ohio) and the L.E. Smith Glass Company (Pennsylvania) from new molds. However, on the newer pieces, the gold was painted on rather than fired on. I would say that this butter dish is original - in my opinion after buying & selling glassware for 35+ years - but please see all of the photos and you be the judge. It is a stunning piece and there are not too many of these out there! Please see the photos, check my feedback, and ask any questions before making a purchase. You will not be disappointed!!
