Here we offer a very early appearance of the classic 1823 American holiday poem, "The Night Before Christmas," or "A Visit From St. Nicholas," by Clement C. Moore, published here in a lighthearted children's collection entitled Child Life, edited by Quaker poet and abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier, and published by Houghton Mifflin and Company, Boston. The book is undated, but its introduction is dated 1871. Also included in the collection is the illustrated first American appearance of Edward Lear's iconic nonsense poem, "The Owl and the Pussy-Cat", among many other wonderful examples of 19th century children's literature. The Victorian binding is especially attractive, featuring silk, gilt-impressed boards with beveled edges; tissue-protected frontispiece; and a gilted text block, all the way around (to keep dust out). Scuffed and stained boards are worn at the head and foot of the spine (please see pics.) Intact endpages; period inscription on blank prelim. The binding is very tight and square. The text and numerous illustrations are very bright and crisp with minor foxing and a few small stains. 263 pages. The book measures approximately 7.5 x 5.5-inches.
