Description: Early Miniature Childs ABC Plate ~ Letter BBALL BIBLE BASKET BOOK BOWL Inkwell Jar Jump ~ Staffordshire 1840 This rare children's transferware ABC plate measures just 5-1/4 inches in diameter. The plate is transfer printed in black with hand painted wisps of blue green and red, and a confetti painted diasy border and a scalloped edge. The center of the plate features superb naïve imagery from an early illustrated childrens primer book introducing a child to the letters of the alphabet. This plate features the letter B and an illustration of a bible, bottle, basket, ball, bat and books. The plate is unmarked and the maker is unknown. It hails from the Staffordshire region of England in the mid-nineteenth century. Plates like this were made as gifts for children and rewards of merit, used to aid in children's education and moral training, and to encourage their imaginations in the 19th century. The pottery version of the single letter alphabet series is quite scarce, a veritable vocabulary lesson. The plate is overall good condition with an old shallow chip on the rim at 3 o'clock (hard to see except on close inspection) with no other chips cracks or repairs. Not fine pottery and not meant to be. Minor manufacturing imperfections – underglaze bumps and stray dots of paint, typical of the period. A great little piece made for a child so long ago! Sold as is, as shown and as described. A pocket sized piece of folk art. Children's early ABC plates in this small or miniature size are quite scarce and highly sought after.
