Description: Creamware Childs Christening Cup A PRESENT FOR A GOOD BOY Staffordshire England c 1820 This is lovely child's christening cup, c 1820-30. The cup stands 2-1/4 inches tall and 2-1/2 inches across excluding the applied handle joined with leaf terminals. Transfer printed in an earthy cinnamon brown with wisp of blue and orange on creamware and a hand painted brick red rim. The mug features the image of a boy riding on a rocking horse or hobby horse. 'A Present for a Good Boy' is transfer printed above the illustration. The cup was made to celebrate the birth or christening of a child or may have been given as a reward of merit and a gift for a special occasion. It most likely was made in the Staffordshire region of England in the early to mid-19th century. References and illustrations of these early child's mugs can be found in Noel Riley's book Gifts for Good Children. The cup is in fair condition. Stable crack vertically through the body and another shallow hairline descending from the rim, as shown. No other chips, cracks or repairs. Minor typical firing imperfections: stilt marks and glaze grit on the foot rim, all original to the making. The design is simple and elegant. It will make a wonderful display and a welcome addition to any collection of children's early wares or collection of early name mugs, and would be a prize possession for a good little boy. Offered as is, as shown. Thank you for bidding!
