Description: For your consideration is a rare one of a kind Weller vase from a local estate. From Weller's acclaimed Louwelsa line the initials of "EA" are from the artist, Elizabeth Ayers. This is a very early and desirable artist in today's market. The half circle seal trademark was used on Louwelsa vases between 1896 and the early 1900s. There are incised numbers and the letter X. There isn't any true identification of what the "X" or the numbers mean, but many collectors opinions think it means they are special, experimental or seconds. All I can say is this vase could very well be experimental as I have not been able to located another example of this shape/form. Very unusual shape for Weller. The other thing that makes this vase unique is that there are parts that are unglazed. Mainly some of the painted flowers which I have tried to show in some of the photographs. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, etc. and there is crazing which is typical for art pottery of this age. I have also photographed some discoloring (?) that I don't have any descriptive words or explanation to what this is. It's like a loss of brown glaze to the rim and the 4 blown out parts of the vessel but it's smooth and like it was supposed to be part of the vase. Or another theory is that it could be a second and it was sold like this and it's not part of the aging process of old glazed pottery. It measures 5.75-inches tall; 1.5-inch rim diameter; 3.5-inch depth and 2.5-inch base diameter. This really is an excellent piece to add to your art pottery or Weller collection.
